A gentler holiday season: Simple ways to slow down

Keeping this one short on the story front but packed with useful things to help you get through what can be a busy time of the year, often with emotions running high…

A snap from a recent 1:1 class and proof that simple tools like markers and paper are enough: the young artist spent 40 minutes creating this picture

1) If you haven’t already, now is the perfect time to set up a permanent “Creative Corner” for your kids (and maybe even yourself). No need to get fancy. Some paper, markers / coloured pencils / oil pastels / scissors / glue sticks will do the trick, perhaps throw in some stickers (these coloured dot stickers from the Warehouse are great for open-ended making)… most of all, keep this space accessible at all times.

Why? Because a ready-to-go creative corner removes obstacles. When materials are within reach, making happens in the in-between moments instead of becoming a big undertaking. It invites small, regular practice. Plus, on hectic days a short art “break” can turn restless energy into calm focus and big emotions into something children can work through with their hands instead of holding in their bodies. (Ahem, said it before and saying it again… also works for us adults 🙃)

2) Enjoy some mindful colouring with these mandala-and-nature-inspired printouts.

Why? Because filling a pattern is a no-pressure way to slow down. It steadies the breath, sharpens focus, and offers a gentle reset.

3) Offer busy little hands and minds some sensory play, and trust me, this isn’t just for under Fives. Here’s a resource that can help and has been requested many times before.

Why sensory play? Messy, textured play helps bodies and brains settle and makes big feelings easier to notice. It builds fine motor skills, curiosity and confidence. Older tamariki (and adults too) can use it to regroup, slow down, and try things without the pressure of “doing it right.”

And with that, happy playing & creating,

Franzi

PS: If you give any of these a go, feel free to send me a photo. I love seeing art play happening outside our classes and workshops.
